Spacecraft operate in conditions far harsher than anything on Earth, while often carrying highly sensitive equipment. Effective temperature management of these assets is therefore critical to ensure their proper functioning and longevity.
MLI is a passive insulation system consisting of multiple layers of perforated reflective films, separated by a spacer material, to reduce heat transfer through thermal radiation. This highly effective system helps to manage operating temperatures within the spacecraft.

MLI by Moonlode
Moonlode has leveraged decades of research and development in the public domain relating to MLI production to produce bespoke systems for its clients.
Moonlode reduces the financial, technical and administrative burden often involved in creating thermal solutions for on-off or limited-run spacecraft by having:
- established supply chains for space-rated films, adhesives and structural fabrics.
- material traceability.
- equipment, infrastructure and expertise specific to MLI manufacturing.
With a deep understanding of regulatory compliance, we ensure that our MLI systems meet the relevant standards and international best practices set by NASA, ESA and ECSS.
Moonlode can support rapid development of MLI to meet the shortest of launch schedules, with a turnaround time of approximately 4 to 8 weeks post-design approval.
Our engineers provide on-site implementation and testing of MLI as a standalone or hybrid thermal management solution. We also offer support remotely and in-person as and when required.
